The enterprises ensuring the basic infrastructures of Slovakia (Slovak Electricity Works, the electric network system, Slovak Gas Enterprise, Transpetrol, Slovak Railways, the water works etc.), as well as the Customs Office, the Army of the Slovak Republic and the Police Corps have not noted any extraordinary events related to the transition into the year 2000. Little local outages of electric power were not related to the year 2000.

Small incidents, which were reported to the police, were also not related to the Y2K problem.

In spite of fears the New Year´s rush has been managed by the Slovak Telecommunication enterprise as well as by mobile operators.

The situation in Slovakia was reported to the IY2KCC in Washington by the Slovak Republic Y2K Transition Centre on January 1st at 00,21 hour. Thereafter informative reports were sent to the Headquarters of NATO in Brussels and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.

The Slovak Republic Y2K Transition Centre specially monitored the nuclear power plants in Jaslovské Bohunice and Mochovce, which confirmed operation without any problems. The electric power plants which are part of the Slovak energy production system operated according their pre-planned programme. No signs of unstability of energy networks appeared neither in the Slovak Republic nor in the CENTREL group of neighbour states (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland).

At 00,30 the Authorisation Centre reported that the ATM systems had become operational and the National Bank of Slovakia confirmed its preparedness for the year 2000.

At 03,00 the internal audit of communication, transmission and data networks of Slovak Telecommunications has been finished with a positive result. The telephone traffic peak after midnight did not achieve expected values.

The transition into year 2000 of organizations ensuring the air transport (Air Traffic Control, Slovak Airport Administration) and road transport (Slovak Road Administration) occurred without any problems.

At 10,40 the Slovak Republic Y2K Transition Centre received message of electric power outage in the aluminium works SLOVALCO in Žiar nad Hronom. The power outage lasted approx. 20 minutes, was not caused by the Slovak Electricity Works and was not related to the Y2K problem.

On January 1st at 13.00 the Slovak Republic Y2K Transition Centre has been set to standby mode. Its activity was officially closed on January 3rd.

The safe transition into the year 2000 testifies of a good and professional preparatory work in the government departments as well as in the enterprises controled by them.

A Y2k
